Lamps and humidity rating

Bathroom lighting

If the luminaire is closer than 120 cm from the shower or 60 cm from the bathtub, it must be located at a height of at least 170 cm and the luminaire's enclosure class must be splash-proof, e.g. IP 24, 34 or 44.

It is not recommended to install lamps without a protective cover above the shower, as a drop of water hitting a hot lamp may break the lamp and glass fragments may cause a dangerous situation.

If the bathroom is connected to the sauna's steam room, the enclosure class of electrical devices located more than 120 cm away must be at least drip-proof (IP 21).

If the bathroom is not connected to the sauna room, there are no special requirements for the enclosure class outside the 120 cm area.

Utility room and toilet lighting

It is safe to install a ceiling light in the utility room and toilet that does not have a moisture protection rating. The lights near the sink are typically IP44 protected, but in fact Luminaires must have a minimum IP21 protection class if the luminaire is located less than 20 cm to the side of the sink or less than 50 cm above the sink. Luminaires outside this range do not require a moisture rating.

Outdoor lights

The most typical IP rating for outdoor lighting is IP44, which means protection against splashing water. On a covered and glazed terrace, porch or balcony, IP21 protection is sufficient. If the lighting is located on a covered terrace, porch or balcony in a place where it can be accessed diagonally horizontally, the requirement is IP23 protection.

The most common IP ratings for wet room luminaires

IP20: Unprotected luminaire.
IP21: Protection against water dripping directly from above.
IP23: Protection against water falling at an angle of up to 60 degrees
IP44: Bathrooms and showers. Carports and garages with floor drains and water pipes. Protection against splashing water.
IP54: Protected against dust. Does not require complete tightness, but harmful dust accumulation must not occur. Protection against splashing water.
IP65: Complete protection. Dustproof. Protection against water jets from all directions.
IP67: Near the waterline. Complete protection. Dustproof. Withstands brief immersion in water.
IP68: Swimming pools. Complete protection. Dustproof. Withstands permanent immersion in water.
