Dining table dimensions and space required for chairs

When designing a dining space, it is important to consider the dimensions of the table and chairs and the space they require. When there is enough room for each diner...

Designing a dining room is more than just choosing beautiful furniture – the right dimensions ensure that the space is practical and comfortable to use. The size of the dining table and the space required by the dining chairs directly affect how functional and comfortable the dining room is in everyday life and at parties. Here is a guide to the right dimensions so you can design the perfect dining room!

Dining table dimensions – choose the right one

The dining table is the focal point of the dining room, and its choice is influenced by both the size of the space and the number of diners. Here are a few important rules of thumb:

  • Space requirement per person : Generally, one diner needs about 60 cm of space at the table to eat comfortably. This means that for example, for four people, the table should be at least 120 cm long. However, we recommend a table for four people of 140 cm in length, as the legs at the end of the table take up at least 10 cm per end.
  • Table width : The optimal width of the table is 90–100 cm, so that there is enough space in the middle for serving dishes or decorations, but all diners can easily reach to take food.
  • Table height : The standard height for a dining table is 75 cm. This height is suitable for most dining chairs and ensures an ergonomic position for dining.

Also consider the space around the table. You should leave at least 90 cm of free space from the edge of the table to the wall or other furniture so that the chairs have enough room to move and the walkways remain unobstructed.

Dining chairs – more than just seats

The size of dining chairs and the space they require is just as important as the size of the table. Here are a few important things to consider when choosing dining chairs:

  • Width and depth : One dining chair requires about 60 cm of space to allow each diner enough room to move and sit comfortably. Also consider the armrests of the chairs, which may require additional space.
  • Chair height : The seat height should be 43–45 cm to fit a standard height (75 cm) dining table. This will leave enough legroom.
  • Distance behind the chair : At least 60–70 cm of free space is needed behind the chair so that the chair can be easily pulled out and the space can be moved smoothly.

Round or rectangular table?

The shape of the table directly affects how much space diners need.

  • Round table : Round tables are great for small spaces because they don't require a corner space. For example, a round table with a diameter of 120 cm can comfortably seat 4 people.
  • Rectangular table : Rectangular tables are space-efficient, attractive and particularly suitable for larger dining rooms. For example, a 180 cm long table can comfortably seat 6–8 people.
  • Oval table: An oval-shaped dining table combines the advantages of a round and rectangular table.

Flexibility and comfort – extendable tables, stackable chairs and lounge chairs

If space is limited or you often host larger dinner parties, extendable tables are a great solution. They allow you to adapt the space to the situation – during the day the table can be more compact, but during the festive season it can accommodate more diners. If your home has both a kitchen and a dining area, one good option is to get two tables with the same design. This way, in situations where you need a larger table, it is easy to move the other table to the dining area. This way, many of our customers have solved the situation where they rarely need a large dining area.

Stackable or foldable chairs are also a practical choice, especially for small spaces. They can be easily stored when not in use and brought out when needed.

Another option is a chair whose design and appearance are suitable for many different spaces. We call these chairs lounge chairs, they can be used as individual chairs, for example in the hallway or bedroom. And then, as needed, they can be brought to another use, for example at the dining table.

Complete your dining space with practicality and style

A dining area doesn't have to be just functional – it can also be beautiful and inviting. Choose a table and chairs that complement your decor and reflect your own style. For example, a dining table made from reclaimed teak combines a rustic look with modern functionality.

Add lighting that enhances the ambiance of your dining area. A pendant light above your dining table is not only practical, but also a great design element. Dimmable lighting allows you to adjust the mood to suit the occasion – bright light for everyday use and soft glow for special occasions. If your dining area doesn’t have a switch with a dimmer, a good option is Airam’s 3 step dim or other smart light.

When designing a dining space, it is important to consider the dimensions of the table and chairs and the space they require. When there is enough room for each diner to move and sit comfortably, the space serves everyday and festive needs better.

With the right solutions, you can create a dining space that is both practical and beautiful – the perfect place to gather with family and friends to enjoy moments together.
