The color, pattern, texture, and size of a rug can make a big difference in the decor of your living room. Choose a rug that complements the color palette and style of your furniture. A solid color rug creates a sleek and calm interior, while patterned rugs can add visual interest.
Rugs are used to "frame" furniture groups. There can be several rugs in a large living room. The most typical way is to frame the sofa area.
A rule of thumb for determining the maximum size of a rug is that the rug should be about 60 centimeters shorter than the shortest wall in the room. If your spacious living room is characterized by a spacious seating area or a corner sofa, there should be room for all the furniture on your rug. This creates a cohesive seating area that visually stands out from its surroundings and creates a particularly cozy atmosphere.
For slightly smaller living rooms, we recommend a medium-sized rug. Here, it is enough to place a third or half of the sofa and armchairs on the rug. This creates a stylish seating area, as the living room furniture and the rug connect with each other.
For small rooms and seating areas, placing the rug directly in front of the sofa is sufficient. However, we always recommend placing the front legs of seating furniture on the rug to create a connection between the interior and the furniture. As a rule of thumb, at least 1/3 of the sofa should be standing on the rug. This is partly to keep the rug in place and partly to connect the furniture in this part of the living room. This arrangement also makes your living room appear larger.
Regardless of the placement you choose, your living room rug should always be at least as wide as your sofa. Ideally, you should add another 20-30 centimeters to the width of the sofa.
